The 4th Global NCD Alliance Forum was a spectacular experience. As one of the over 650 delegates, I was impressed by the level of organization showcased by the Global NCD Alliance and its partners. But it was not just the event that elevated the NCDs as a priority topic. It was the famed Kigali Car-Free Day which provided the delegates with a glorious opportunity to witness a groundbreaking public health initiative in Rwanda. This government-led initiative encourages citizens to engage in physical activities like walking, jogging, and cycling while promoting community-based NCD prevention strategies. As an advocate for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) prevention, I was deeply inspired by the level of commitment and participation demonstrated by Kigali residents.
A Community-Driven Approach to Health
Kigali Car-Free Day is more than just a restriction on vehicular movement; it is a well-organized community event that promotes a healthier lifestyle. On this particular day, major roads are closed to motorized traffic, allowing thousands of residents to take to the streets for physical exercise. It was incredible to see the enthusiasm of different groups, many of whom arrived at the starting points in matching outfits, chanting songs to energize the participants. This sense of organization and collective motivation made the event truly special.

Walking the Talk: My Experience
I had the privilege of joining the walk from Kigali Conference Centre to Norrsken, an experience that was both fulfilling and enlightening. Seeing entire families, corporate teams, and local organizations actively participate reinforced my belief in the power of community-driven health initiatives. The presence of children was particularly heartwarming, as engaging young people in physical activity from an early age fosters lifelong healthy habits.

A Commitment to Long-Term Health Benefits
One of the standout aspects of the Kigali Car-Free Day is its duration. The event spans nearly three hours, allowing ample time for participants to engage in aerobic activities that boost cardiovascular health and overall well-being. This structured approach to exercise demonstrates Rwanda’s commitment to improving long-term health outcomes through regular physical activity.
Beyond exercise, the initiative incorporates free health screening and consultations, making it a comprehensive public health intervention. Participants had access to services such as BMI calculations, blood pressure screening, and blood sugar testing. Observing how willingly people embraced these screenings spoke volumes about Rwanda’s proactive health culture and its citizens’ willingness to take charge of their health.
A Model for NCD Prevention Globally
Physical inactivity is a leading risk factor for NCDs such as heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, and obesity. Rwanda’s approach directly addresses this by making exercise accessible and enjoyable for all. Moreover, combining physical activity with health screenings ensures that early detection and prevention remain a priority.
Kigali Car-Free Day is a testament to how leadership, policy, and community engagement can work together to tackle NCDs. The Rwandan government has set an exemplary standard in using urban planning and public health policies to create sustainable solutions. Other countries seeking to reduce the burden of NCDs can draw valuable lessons from this initiative.
The 4th Global NCD Alliance Forum focused on Leadership on NCDs Towards 2025 and Beyond, making Kigali Car-Free Day a perfect embodiment of this theme. The initiative aligns with global commitments such as WHO’s target to reduce physical inactivity by 15% by 2030 and provides a working model for achieving this goal.

A Call to Action for Other Cities
Rwanda’s leadership in public health offers a blueprint for other nations. Cities around the world should consider implementing similar car-free days, integrating physical activity and health screenings to promote NCD prevention. Governments, policymakers, and public health advocates must take inspiration from Rwanda’s example and push for community-centered solutions.
As I reflect on my experience at the Kigali Car-Free Day, I am filled with admiration for the commitment of the Rwandan government and its people. They have provided a practical and scalable approach to fighting NCDs, reinforcing the need for bold leadership and community engagement in global health efforts. This initiative is a clear demonstration of how innovative, inclusive strategies can transform public health outcomes.
