Breast cancer is a pressing global health concern, and with research establishing a clear link between alcohol and seven types of cancer, including breast cancer, the need for innovative awareness campaigns has never been more critical. I had the incredible privilege of contributing to the “Be Loud for Change” (BL4C) Campaign by co-creating a song that highlights the harmful role alcohol plays in increasing cancer risks. The initiative, led by Movendi International, sought to spark global conversations and urge policymakers to address this preventable alcohol-related public health issue.
The journey of recording the song alongside the talented Ogweno Stephen was as inspiring as it was purposeful. Below, I reflect on the campaign, the science behind its message, and why music is such a powerful medium for advocacy.
The Message Behind BL4C
The “Be Loud for Change” initiative aimed to:
- Raise awareness of the correlation between alcohol consumption and cancer, particularly breast cancer.
- Challenge policymakers to act decisively against the alcohol industry’s pervasive marketing and influence.
Research has consistently shown since the 1980s that alcohol consumption contributes to cancers of the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, oesophagus, colorectum, liver, and female breast. In fact, the WHO classifies alcohol as a Class 1 carcinogen, highlighting the urgent need for public health advocacy and reform.
Why Use Music for Advocacy?
Music transcends cultural, social, and linguistic barriers, making it an incredibly effective tool for advocacy. Here are key reasons why music is a powerful medium to communicate public health messages:
- Emotional Resonance- Songs can evoke strong emotions, creating a deeper connection with the audience. The lyrics of “Be Loud for Change” are a call to action, blending urgency with empathy, which makes the message memorable.
- Broad Reach- A song can reach diverse audiences, from young people to policymakers, through platforms like radio, streaming services, and social media. Music amplifies the campaign’s reach beyond traditional communication methods.
- Simplifying Complex Information– Scientific concepts, such as the carcinogenic effects of alcohol, can be challenging to explain in a way that resonates with the public. Music simplifies these ideas into relatable narratives and catchy melodies, making them accessible to everyone.
- Building Movements- Advocacy songs inspire collective action. “Be Loud for Change” seeks to rally people behind the fight against alcohol-related cancers, creating a shared sense of purpose.
- Lasting Impact: Unlike other forms of communication, songs stick in people’s minds. A compelling tune can keep the campaign’s message alive long after the initiative ends.
